In April 2006 .EU domain names are going to be online.

How do you think this will effect Google and other search engines?

It'll just add more pages to the index. I don't see how it would have any other effect, positive or negative.

Google has local language search sites. for example. Google.de Google.es etc etc etc.

When you seach "computer" on the local site, you get results that are intressting for you. On the German Google, you do not get spanish results.

When .EU comes, this will effect how google searches.

    For example.

    1. Will Google see it as a .com/.net and index it on all local sites?
    2. Will there be a Google.eu that searches all europian local sites, so when you search for "computer" you get spanish, german, french and other sites about computers

so, how do you think this will effect Google and other search engines?

That would be because of the language, not because of the location. I could build a page in german here in Mexico and could get it ranked at Google.de

You are right Johnburk, Google likes local sites in local listings. So now, if the domain is something like .es or .fr, they will rank a little bit better in google.es and google.fr, for example, without speaking about search only websites on that country. If the domain is something like .com now Google is watching at where the domain is hosted.

So what could happen to .eu domains? In fact Google.eu can exist, but too many languages in Europe make nosense to have a google.eu search.

Google will use the .eu to say it's an european website or will use the hosted country like .com or .net?

It affects search results, in particular paid results.
For example I am in Australia and when I have an Adwords campaign running targetting the US I have to use a US proxy server to view the position of my adds, interestingly they are usually a few positions away from the position Adwords tells me.

I guess most countries are the same.

Is the .eu domain seen as a .com .org .info .net or as a country one: .de .us .nl etc.. ?

    Hi all,

I think Google is also keeping eye on this matter. It is definately planning or has planned some solution to tackle the forthcomming problem.

    What's your opinion ?
It might happen that it launches google.eu

    Thanks :)

I think that it will launch a google.eu. The area (and the richness of the people in it) is very large, and companies (and people) in Europe do a lot of inter-country business, making a eu domain very desirable to lots of people. eg. Italian olive growers selling olives in Germany etc.

Edit, I'm off to register ItalianOlives.eu
    :D

.eu is going to be an enrichment for all, since the english language will be used more and more than before and therefore its much better for english sites/services to come closer with europe and the other way round.

    @arnie

According to eur-id, there are by far more french, german en italian .eu domain name request than english.

If europe had one language, then .eu would be real powerfull. Reaching 300 to 400 miljoen people.

It certainly makes european seo interesting.
An important point will be how google relates .eu domains with their hosting. It is easy to relate .de with germany, .uk with Uk but what about .eu ? Will it cover all sites hosted anywhere in europe ?

I have a feeling that it will behave a bit like a .com does in European countries. I think if you were in uk, it would have more importance than .de, .be etc but less/same as .co.uk, who knows maybe even more value than a .com.

This thing is backed by the European Union, I'm sure that there has been a lot of back handers going on to ensure that it is a success.

Deano (English, British, European) in that order, I've lived in a few European countries, and been to many more. Most people are proud of where they are from, I'm pretty sure that if you asked 99% of people in Europe where they are from, they would say Scotland, Spain, France, Poland, Russia etc before they said Europe. Yet they are all proud to be associated with Europe too. Just like people from India are proud to be from Asia etc.
