How do you take your website to the next level?

I posted this on another forum as well, but I really wanted your opinions as well. Your help would be appreciated.
I have been working on SEO for about 5 months now and have started to see some good results. I am having a custom website built which should help with my results. However, I seem to be running out of directories to submit to, and I am having a hard time getting my articles to be published online. What do I need to do, or what do others do to get their website to be tops with many of their search terms? Recently I feel like i just hit a wall.

Reading SEO blogs will help. Without knowing the specifics of your keyword, it is difficult to predict how much effort needs to be put in to rank for that keyword.

Build links, and do it on a steady, consistent basis

I think the best way is actually building content/tools that generate links in a natural way. That or spending some $$$ on buying links (depending how competitive the keywords are). When you run out of free sites where you can place your link, normally ethical link baiting is the best solution.

I'm pretty new at this too. I did a little research on the keyword tool I use and see that you rank in the mid 300's in Google for holland real estate. You rank pretty well for realtor holland at 38 and for holland realtor 116.

There's probably some ways to improve your current site, but why not buy a new domain name and create some new content for that site. I checked hollandrealtor.com and it's taken, but the other dot extensions for these keywords are available.

I think a new domain name with good SEO can skyrocket your SERP since it doesn't appear that the keywords of Holland and Realtor are too competitive.

Submitting to directories isn't going to help your site grow to the next level.

The goal for most of us is sustainable long term rankings in Google without tricking the search engines. To do this you need to create passionate users who read your site regularly and subscribe to your feeds. Then you need to start getting the larger blogs in your niche to link to your content on a regular basis.

Its hard but worth it in the long run. :) Send me a PM if you want any help.

It means you write up a very good article or content and getting linked by many because of that. :)

Contact other webmasters in your niche and let them know about your site.
    Exchange some reviews & links.
If you are a creative person you can even organize some kind of a contest.
People love contests and this could create a lot of buzz around your site.

A new idea can also help, and idea is nothing more than re-arranging the existing patterns

You mean to say you increase your website's popularity? Hmmm, I can say is that do frequent updates on your content and if you are tired of your design, update it also.

Have you approached the various home builders in the area - they may have websites.
    A couple I found;
    Builders.
    dekleinebuilders.com
    bosgraaf.com
    michiganshelfwest.com
    holland-homes.com

    Mortgage.
    danmoralez.net

Also, if your a member of the Chamber of Commerce they will normally list members websites.

    Anyway you get the idea.
