Read up on the following (just search in Google and you should find links to tons of helpful info):

HTML and CSS (used to program your site)
domain name (used to register a site)
    Wordpress (used for blogging)
Blogger (free easy to use blogging system)
Hosting (how and what types of hosting exist).

Make website on your computer, buy hosting, buy domain name, point domain name to hosting, upload files.

Probably get domain first, but that's the jist of it.

You should check out www.free-templates.org, they have lots of great templates that you can work with as you start out. Making websites really isn't hard once you figure out the basics. Making money is where it gets trickier.

You know what? Just to get the basics, try Building Websites for Dummies. That'll get you far enough to be able to know what to ask next.

    1) Know what you want for a website.
    2) Create said website (either coded yourself or using a pre-coded template)
    3) Get hosting, theres a bunch of places, personally I use dreamhost and it's served me well so far.
    4) Upload said site to the host (probably via ftp using an ftp program such as filezilla - it's free, just search google and you'll find it).
    5) Promote said website.

You can start easily, as practice, with a web editor like front page 2000 or the popular free NVU. Then maybe start by signing up with a free host, e.g. Netfirms Basic from http://www.netfirms.com/ or the popular http://www.110mb.com/ Many free hosts have their own free web editors.

Perhaps download and use a free template from one of many templates web sites, e.g. http://www.steves-templates.com/ then up load your site to your host (use a free FTP program to upload your site - e.g. core FTP). Then you can promote it in forums, search engines, directories, etc, if you want.

You could start with a blog as well, e.g. try the Google’s blogger or the advanced wordpress (which you can add plug ins for enhancement), or use the simple Google Page Creator (You need a Gmail account) - easy to set up for a beginner.

Later on though, it might pay to learn html/JavaScript/PHP etc, which allows more flexibility to design and modify your web site. Then maybe upgrade to a paid host and domain, which will possibly yield more features (scripting, bandwidth, increased storage space, email accounts, etc) and more ownership of your site...

One cool thing that you might find useful is the page source, when I started making websites, I found that you can view the html code for other websites by going to view > page source. It can help give you an idea of how some websites are built.

I know that was a little off topic, but its useful :)

    Hi everyone,

Great replies and help! ...I just started a site myself, myartworldsite.com and I found some great advice in here!
However, not to digress from this post, I was wondering if anyone would be willing to help guide me to a good source for finding scripts similar to myspace? ...my site will be based on a network theme, like myspace, and I'm just trying to get as much opnions/advice as possible.

    Thanks!

If you don't like to read tutorial and prefer to jump to the practicals, I suggest you start messing around with Dreamweaver or another website developement program. Look at what each function does, then check the code behind it. I've learned that way as I don't like theory parts that much, and it usually works.
