Have we determind if they were talking Copywriter or Freelance Writer? One way to develop you copywriter skills is to promote your own site, service, or product. Be keen on what you do and watch the results. Not getting what you are looking for - rework it and see the results. Keep the things that improve your results and dump those that don't. After a few iterations you should have a small bag of tools that can be reused. Also, try promoting something as an affiliate. Don't just send your traffic to the affiliate link - presell and squeeze the visitors - by time they get to the affiliate link the selling should be done.
I would strongly recommend you learn to write sales copy. It's the best paid and most in demand style of copywriting on the internet. I was a syndicated health columnist, I've done PR writing, I've written for magazines, etc etc. Writing online sales copy is by far the best paying work I've seen as long as you're good and you help your clients make real profits. Kindest regards, Andrew Cavanagh
