Directory owners, How do you sort your listings ? By PR or date or alphabetically or by alexa or any other method ? And why ? I sort my directory listings by "Date" - The old one stays top on the new ones - "first come first serve"
I sort by date as well. The reason I do this is out of respect for those who signed up first. First come first serve. I think that is the best way to it as it does not show any form of favoritism.
For me its alphabetical as standard, then its down to user intervention, hits, ratings or biding for position etc...
Just asking, but do you think thats fair to your submitters, I had a pagerank thingy on my main directory, but I decided to remove it, I felt it wasn't fair for new sites, what do you guys think ?
I consider that a person who submitted a PR6 website has worked harder to achieve that, meanwhile someone who submitted a PR3 one. But if the submitter wanna be on top on the others, he will always have the opportunity to do it on my directory( by sponsoring link & banners ads, getting a featured, etc ) Tell me if I'm wrong...
Noting wrong, I'm just curious about views on listing by PR, do you show a PR or is that an internal function ?
I choose to sort them by date as there is no reference to PR, Alexa or any other 3rd part rating system on my directory.
I see flaws with most sorting methods so I let the users of my directory decide placement by hits with some restrictions on how they are counted. If sites are interested in gaining additional hits to move up they can use the site of the day mod for additional exposure and hits or just get a featured listing. The traffic and the submitters control the placement. It may not be perfect but there are flaws with any ranking system. imo
By date in order of submission. Sorting by date is the only method that doesn't rely on a 3rd party. Do all of you that sort on PR update every time that G does one? That's my biggest complaint with the sites that sort by PR - they don't keep it current.
Alphabetically - easiest to use from a human visitor's POV? By Date - caters to submitters as there really is no other benefit? By PR - seems fickle, given the accuracy of the foolbar and the lack of updates by directory owners. By Hits - really of no benefit to anyone and prone to abuse.
Alphabetically is all too often abused. Besides, if I am using a directory to find something, I don't know the name of the site I want anyway. Date does cater to submitters. Why should someone who submitted when my site was brand new and totally unknown be stuck somewhere deep in a category simply because their site name comes near the end of the alphabet? A note about hits, if a directory is truly sending the listed sites a decent amount of traffic, it could become a good measurement in time. I did have a few folks trying to game the top hits page. But now that my top 10 sites have 500-1200 hits, it's harder to fake. The top hits and new listings also seem to get the most love from the search engines - not having those pages on a directory is a mistake.
