How do how do you set up a web server? I am looking for free software at the time being and unsure how to go about doing this. I want to create a free hosting company "This will be my new hobby" Thanks

You are only going to make customers mad if you are truly starting a webhost just as a "hobby". Unless you are technically inclined I would find another hobby.

Read up on Apache for Linux or ISS if you choose to use windows. There is also a bunch of free control panels out there. Many linux distro's come with Apache installed. CentOS is very popular in the webhostin world.

Basically, a basic webserver with free software, is known as LAMP . Which stand for Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP.

You could google LAMP installation for more info.

As suggested, I would also say, you should go with a reseller solution, rather then creating and hosting your own server, unless you have all the ressources needed.

somewhere along the line, the physical box needs to be hosted.

the cheaper way for you to go is to find a dedicated box from a hosting company. the dedicated box will already have a web server installed.

if you don't already know the hosting environment and don't already know apache, i wonder if you are really ready for this.
