There are also some other good tools which helps in keyword research, I prefer Wordtracker and Google adword tool, it is not necessary to select all long tail low competitive keywords , low competitive keywords also have low traffic. If you know SEO than try to get traffic generator keywords.

I pick my product first, then I ignore Google's idea of high or low competition and research it myself by searching the keywords and running the top results through siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com, if I can beat their backlinks then I can outrank them.
    It works for me :)

I like the Google keyword tool the best, look for low competition keywords with a high search volume. To see your competition type in the phrase into Google and see how many pages come up and what kind of pages they are.

If you understand the consumer/market you wish to enter, then doing keyword research becomes very easy.

well, low competative keywords, it may get good SE index result, but i dont think you will get good traffic,
cuz seldom people will search these low compe. keywords.
so, for me, as the development of the SEM, i think SE keyword policy will change one day.

I will suggest you at first analyze the site very well then choose by yourself which keywords are describing your content or your site. Then jot down all. Google keywords tool really helpful, but you can select this by yours because you know best about your product. Tool;s can suggest you and give you the search volume globally and locally to select the appropriate keyword. But I prefer atleast 10 best keywords for the site. And one more thing Low competitive keywords choose good but for long time SEO, it will take time to get traffic or organic visitors.

Hi, I use the google adwords tool for the free one and use Micro Niche Finder and SE Cockpit for the paid tools. Paid tools just give you abit more data to play with.
