Do you hire staff members through applications or invitations?

I am just curious as to how you guys recruit staff members for your forum. I just wrong an article on my blog entitled "Staff Recruiting on a Forum: Applications vs. Invitations" and I thought I would see how many of you get your staff through these two methods.

Go ahead and vote in the poll.

I always invite people if they are active and if I think they can handle the responsibility. I don't recruit people who ask to become moderators.

I think this is the best way to choose Moderators.

It depends, if your just starting out, your forum is brand new and your looking for moderators to help you start off I would post a announcement about staff recruiting.

If your forum is quite active and you need help controlling all the spam etc. I would look around the forum for the helpful, active users and invite them.
