I know 'priority' tag in sitemap will not affect Google page rank. It is just to tell Google bot importance of each individual page. My Question is this, How do you prioritize your pages? What are the most important pages in a site??
Priority values can be calculated automatically based on internal linking... (Or if you wish do it manually, your highest quality pages?) You can try check this article about calculated priority values in XML sitemaps
Ok thanks for this piece of information. But what is the meaning of 0.0 priority? Your article says "Pages with high priority values are likely to get indexed faster and crawled more often." So that means 0.0 pages has "No Value at all - So shouldn't be indexed" OR "It has a very little value"?
I think it will be better to leave the priority values to their defaults i have never poked into my sitemap settings but still, all my forums pages are getting indexed at the speed of light the sitemaps are coded in such a way that they will automatically set the priority without needing the webmaster to look into that
Ok thanks again, But i have a special case in my site. So i have to prioritize, I have about total of 30,000 pages in my site. Out of that about 28,500 pages are dynamically generated City data (Contain only longitude latitude and few other attributes) About 900 is world airport data (Contain very few details about airports.) Other pages are the most important pages.. I don't want Google to prioritize dynamic pages. I want google to give least priority to those pages. Thats why i need to prioritize them manually...
The priority value is all relative to other pages in your website. Valid values go from 0.0 to 1.0. I don't believe 0.0 means the page won't get crawled at all, just that it will have lowest priority
Ok thanks, I'll change the current priority 0.1 to 0.0... Automatic priority will not work as all internal pages are linking to each other in same way...
it depends upon the site. if you use wordpress, most important pages are 1. posts 2. archives 3. categories 4. tags
It's best to let google to automatically determine the priority of pages. I don't know what you're hoping to achieve by lowering the priority of some pages, but I think it's probably not worth your while.
