I have always wondered how my banner guy can take a person from a stock image and seemingly perfectly put them in another background

    what tool are they using?

You want to get a person and move him to a background image?

I recommend downloading Fluidmask, Best thing to delete the background of the persons image and then move the person to a new background image

    OR

You can just use the Magic wand tool on photoshop

I use flash for this but most people prefer photoshop. I tend to do all my logos etc. with flash, just an old habit :p

hmm You can try to make a mask in channels' window. You should copy e.g BLUE CHANNEL and try to change LEVELS. It can help you remove background ;) I often use this technique to remove trees from a BLUE SKY ;)

    Good luck :)

when i first began removing people (or animals, or whatever) from a background image, i actually used the eraser tool (i went through a lot of aspirin that way lol) but imo, the pen tool in photoshop works the best. i sometimes use the channels feature in conjunction with the pen tool to get a better idea of what the image looks like without the background, but for me, it's the pen tool.
