How do you organize your files?

I must confess that I'm a believer in the "organized chaos" theory when it comes to organizing the files for my site. I generally dump everything in the root directory, but after adding quite a few pages, images etc. it tends to become a bit of a mess.

How do you guys organize your files? Do you create subdirectories for each section of your site?

When I first started, I used to do it like you: everything in the root directory. But for my newer sites I am using directories: neater, easier to manage, and better site hierarchy.

    Directories, best bet.

If you organize your sites in a logical manner, for instance

    Root
    -images
    -includes
    -_private
    -news
    -products
    -services
    etc

You get a clear, folder based organization where you wont get lost, and might even improve your SERPs.

For instance, the cars scenario. You can create a folder
    -cars
Then create subs within the folder
    -sports
    -sedans
    -wagons

And so on. It's really up to you, but you will get a little more of a SEO benefit from search terms being present in the url.

For instance, www.mysite dot com/cars/sedan/acura/a-car-name.html might have a little boost over www.mysite dot com/a-car-name.html.

I'm not saying absolutely, you'll have to check with the SEO experts in the forum, but at the very least, you'll be able to organize yourself much, much better.
