How Do You Open a .docx File with Microsoft Word (2003)

Discussion in 'General Chat' started by yfs1, Aug 24, 2006.

I don't use Word that often so I actually have Word 2003. Someone sent me a Word file with the newer .docx file extension.

    How do I open that?

Doing a bit of Googling I found info that you just say yes when it asks about downloading the converter. Thats fine except it displays as gibberish.

Anyone know what I may either be doing wrong or what the best way to open it is?

    Cheers

*.docx files are for the new Office beta. Although I'm sure they must be backwards compatible.

Nope, Microsoft claims they are compatible once you install a converter but I have never gotten it to work.

I ended up requesting the person only supply .doc word documents...Can't wait until Vista

you cant open a .docx in anything but office 2007 unless you have a converter addon installed..

you should have saved it as .doc (2003 compatible), theres an option for it in office 2007 when you save

Except if the file is given to you, you have no control over how it was saved. That was the point of the original question last year (and that add on never really worked)
