How do you motivate yourself to learn new skills?

Every now and then I come up against a "mountain" where I need to invest more than the usual. Currently I am in such a situation and find the mountain a bit high!
How do you "trick" yourself to get started?
I know it's the first step that counts - I made the first step - but I had a week's break and now it drags!
Also I need to invest more time than I planned to ...
Any suggestions how to overcome this? What have you done in similar situations?

Think about your life, and what could happen if what your doing works. Think about what will happen if you don't keep moving forward. Thoughts like that will make you want to continue.

    hello,
motivation don't come from out side .if there is real necessity then you will reach the peak of the mountain with out getting inspiration or motivation from others ex:-if you are hungry do you need motivation to eat ..no -you will automatically do it because you cant survive!! i observe deeply in to human life.there are two kind of people who attain their success 1.one for survival instinct 2. by luck because there are many people dont reach their goals even they devote their life in hard work so the word luck plays an important role.i hope you understand ..
    regards

Interesting comments! Thanks a lot guys for sharing your thoughts!
It makes me think that I don't need motivation from the outside to go and eat because I will eat when I am hungry! That's so true!
So I will learn when I really want to get ahead.
Starving - putting my head in the sand and not learning and stop seeking, is basically equal with giving up. That's NOT choice for me!
Thanks a lot, it helps to think it through like this!

I don't think I quite agree with all of what you said. Sure, if ur hungry u don't need motivation to eat. But, if u are hungry and need to stop urself from eating because of health reasons etc., it does require motivation to control ur hunger.

I read books that are uplifting. Visit motivational sites like the one from Joe Vitali.

I also reward myself with anything I have in mind when I accomplish something.

Some things I just force myself to do. I often listen to music while learning something that I don't particularly want to learn as well. This keeps those thoughts of dread out of my mind and helps me concentrate on the task at hand.

I just think of how much doing this will affect my life. You will go nowhere in life if you go nowhere in your schooling. So learning new things constantly will basically help to increase you life in more ways than one.

It is my belief that if you need huge motivation to learn new skills then the skills you are seeking probably not in your best interest.

I am not sure - I find I need huge motivation when something is so new and different compared to everything else I have learnt so far. A new topic, no connections, seemingly babystuff. It is mind block more than anything else I gueses. Probably just do it and then rejoice once you mastered the babysteps and can start connecting information better.

It would be so easy to continue learning in my preferred subjects! :)

Focus on the end goal. Look at every small thing you do is moving you closer and closer to where you want to be - the place you visioned when you first started.

Remember, genius is 1% inspiration, 99% perspiration (ie hardwork)

Well, It always takes a long time if i decide starting any new projects. However, if i've start it i'll finish it at all. If you cannot motivate yourself, it means your project wrong. Just my opinion.

setting little goals helps, instead of going all out, you get frustrated and end up stressed or quitting whatever your trying to learn.

the little goals help you feel like your getting somewhere and before you know it your proficient in whatever your learning.
