How do you market your directory?

    I'm new around here, new enough to already be asking lots of questions :)

    Anyhow, I am awfully curious how those of you directory owners market your site. Obviously, the solicitations area for directories on DP is a good start, but what else do you do? In another thread I addressed if a directory is profitable, if you are using a specific marketing technique that is also helping to make your directory profitable, would you care to share about it?

    your best bet would be to make your directory unique because there are thousands and thousands of general directories out there.
    Do you're keyword research, pick a niche. Then submit to directory lists. Or add your directory to directory lists.

    I think that's really great advice insom, thanks for that. Making yourself unique and stand out from the rest would probably be the ticket to success however it wouldn't be very cheap in the beginning. I imagine getting a custom script coded for whatever brilliant idea you have to do with a directory would be rather costly, then if I fail to market it correctly I would really be in trouble.

    The solicitations on forums are not always a good start believe me ;) And many here would decline to share their marketing strategies :)

    I figured this would be the case. Usually when you can lock onto a good marketing strategy that is making money you wouldn't want to share it. However, if anyone has some basic marketing methods that can be revealed I would greatly appreciate it.

    You need to brand your directory. And that is not as easy as it sounds with thousands of directories competing for a limited number of submissions. You will need to make your directory unique, invest in technology that benefits visitors and submitters, and provide a high level of customer service. This is not an overnight process as it can take years. But if you work hard, and do not collapse at the lack of revenue, you can succeed.

    Also you may use promotions and all the web.2.0 services and social networks to promote your directory.

    Dont forget plain old on page search engine optimisation - if you carefully design your categorys and take the time to customise your pages and meta values you can get some good natural traffic. You wont generate much traffic using this if you have just cloned using pdpld etc though.
