This is just a general question out of curiosity. When someone approaches you to do JV, but you've never heard of the guy before, what steps would you take to ensure that he/she is legit?
If you have more experience/reputation than the potential JVer, then you should put most of the "risk" on him initially, to avoid any potential losses on your part.
List some point you want to confirm and ask him/her questions . Test his/her sincerity of will for the cooperation .
You don't? See if you can talk to them on the phone, find out what personal information they are willing to share. If they are serious, they shouldn't have a problem.
Don't be afraid to ask for personal and professional references, especially asking for someone who has a done a JV with them before.
Doing a JV in this virtual world is froth with danger... It is always better to talk with him personally on phone over and over again...and try to gauge his consistency as regards his personal information, abilities etc.... Talking repeatedly over phone for couple of days will give you fair idea of his attitude. Though, it is better to test the relationship over a longer time frame before doing any partnerships. I won't be worry much coz i will sign contract with him and an agreement to prevent him from scamming. And i'll run a background cross reference check against him to find out more about him such as previous JV,total wealth, bankruptcy status etc
always set up tracking to see what is working or not. track sales from the campaign and then split them. Never rely on their word set it up so thay cannot steal from you with tracking of sales etc
Ive tried to avoid doing JVs, I have several sites with friends I know well, but we know each other from offline businesses and actually live fairly close by
Yeah JV always seem to end badly with people that I don't know online, last JV I did I ended up getting screwed out of 5k-10k. The other day this scammer contacted another guy in my office to buy some US installs and was bragging about how much money he had made with CPA autosubmits. Yet at the same time he was telling me that he how he had never been paid. Personally I wouldn't risk more than you can afford to loose in a JV. If you start things off slow and let them pick up over time, the typical scammer is going to get bored and move on.
