how do you increase internet connection speed?

I have a PC and a broadband connection at home. even if the connection speed is 100MBPS, we feel that its not that fast when we connect to the internet. dO you think the problem is in the computer itself and not in the internet connection? How can we fixed it? I will appreciate your ideas and your suggestions.

Get a faster connection, computer specs don't help. About the 100mbps thing. You see it is 100, or 1 or 512, or 56 kbps (small b, its bits not bytes), so if you want to find the transfer in bits, divide it by 8.

So a 64 Kbps connection will give you 8 KBps.

 

The connection speed to your router is 100 mbps, but the speed to the internet is less, look on the site of your provider how much it is.. and request an upgrade from them if you want faster internet

Also, to have a better internet speed you have to spend more $$$, that's it, just call ur provider to know about it

You're probably on LAN network (cable net). The 100 Mbps speed is between your PC and the server PC, it doesn't mean that your internet will that much faster. It will depend on the internet connection which your cable operator use

 

Please dont waste your time on creating ideas for your self. All you have to do is just contact your internet service provider and update the speed connection. Thats all.

 

100Mbps would be LAN as sufi pointed out. Just call up your ISP and change your plan to one which gives you a higher speed.

 

I used to have 1M line, and it felt slow. Then i called the provider and ordered
24/3M line, it costs me 45E a month, thats around 55$ month. I'm soooo
happy with the speed, its just never too slow. Now when i go to IsoHunt and
get my self a movie, some times i get 700mb movie in 7 minutes. Think about
that....

Go and upgrade, you will not regret, just make sure you take something more
than 10m line..

 

Which ISP do you use?

100 MBps ...My ISP doesn't even offer connections with such speeds.

I have a 192 Kbps connection and still I am satisfied with the speed I am getting.

I think you should call your interent provider, because that is where the problem is always is.

 

It maybe because of a virus or spyware using your internet speed.

I once read the following trick to boost up the speed,

Windows uses 20% of your bandwidth! Get it back 

A nice little tweak for XP. Microsoft reserve 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes (suspect for updates and interrogating your machine etc..) 

Here's how to get it back: 

Click Start-->Run-->type "gpedit.msc" without the " 

This opens the group policy editor. Then go to: 

Local Computer Policy-->Computer Configuration-->Administrative Templates-->Network-->QOS Packet Scheduler-->Limit Reservable Bandwidth 

Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab : 

"By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default." 

So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%. 
works on XP Pro, and 2000 other OS not tested. 

Note: Doesn't work on WinXP Home Editon!

No --- u can't increase speed even if u change ur service provider because that logic applies to everyone in india (not world)

Ur download speed will always be ur actual bandwidth speed divided by 8
So, 64kbps ---- 8 kbps
128Kbps ----- 16 Kbps
256Kbps ----- 32 Kbps (though on Dataone, i get 37 Kbps)

The reason i said india and not world above is because, in other parts of world like UK, USA --- people are lucky, because they not only have such packs which we have here but also a lot od other ones like:

256 Kbps bandwidth( Download speed 180 Kbps & Upload Speed 5 Kbps) or vice versa but just 32 Kbps bandwidth for browsing
256 Kbps Bandwidth ( Download speed 248 Kbps --- with a dialup browsing bandwidth 28Kbps and no upload possible)

They have so many similar choices, but here nothing

So, only option for u would be to go for Higher speeds.

 

It is not that download speed is one-eighth of bandwidth.

Actually browsers show download speed in KBps and ISPs measure bandwidth in Kbps... that's why the 1:8 ratio comes in.

1 KBps = 8 Kbps.

 

Ah.. that means ISP advertises as KiloBits per second and the browser tell us KiloBytes per second, thats why we see huge difference while downloading a file.

 

Get broadband. LOL, everything else is just compressing files to speed up your connection..

 

its not in your computer, its your connection.
the most common connection speed is 3mbps,
100MB wouldn't be available in homes, only in certain datacenters.

 

You have to change your connection type to higher speed

 

the connection would probably go higher, but it's limited and you can't stop that, if you don't pay for a faster one.
