I delete them manually. If I see something spammy words in Title, I delete them instantly.

Just like posts #2 and #5 I use my own spamGuard and don't see any.

There's lot's of methods to use, and Anon's mod for phpld is the best for that particular software without a doubt. At phpLynx we decided to take dual action and employ a no pay - auto - delete, and a text/image captcha system just in case you want to give the potential submittor a chance to make payment. We're pretty proud of this and it doens't just help prevent spam, it stops it in it's tracks.

I guess I'll be choosing phpLynx next time, just to see all this greatness I read about it. I can imagine some cheesy guy on the big screen saying those exact words, just like a Gilette advert:D

I personally beat the spammers by:

    - Banning every IP that submits a crap site. Hah, I'm a cruel bastard sometimes.
    - Using Captcha
    - Using a javascript function which 'should' stop automatic bots surfing the 'submit' link.

All three, or a combination of, have seen my automated submissions down to a big fat zero - with phpLD 3.2. Although I did notice when I put my directory link in my signature here the amount of spam was sick, a couple of days after removing it from my signature - - no spam! Whether or not that was coincidental, I don't know.

Feel free to PM me if you'd like the javascript code.

ha! I actually have a MOD that auto checks, sends out a notice, and if they to not comply with review fee within 3 days time, they automatically get deleted.

Sometimes people get fubar'd by paypal or their web connection gets hit. It's not always good to auto delete a submission, and I can say that 80-85% of the time when they are notified, they pay for the review and are happy they received a notice due to their unfortunate web connection meltdown and/or paypal screw-up.

My talent and focus these days tends to be on my better half. :)

ha! yea, I'm sure a great many people here have issues with paypal as well.
Their services are so unstable at times and it used to be frustrating, until I wrote another MOD to update and handle the tables and sync everything again.
(damn it used to be a pain in the a$$terick. phpld annoys me these days with its cumbersome code more than anything..funny eh?)

Add some rules or submission guidelines to follow.

Bots don't read. The majority of what constitutes directory spam is stuff submitted by bots, not real people.

Substandard and off-topic submissions are also a problem for directory owners, but I don't know whether or not this is what most owners would consider spam.

I'll guarantee that you can't get through the phpLynx spam protection newsniche and that's not boasting, its a fact. We set the standard in anti bot protection and others are now realizing the importance of it. As smart as the bots are there are just as smart programmers who will work to defeat them. ;)
