Hello, I was wondering. If you have a site with a forum on it, how does one get more members? I heard allot of the time getting a site to get as big as this one is really just by luck. Is that true? Or is there some sort of tricks behind it?

Just luck? Its not just luck, whoever told you that should be shot.

It is all about building a good reputation, having a site that people want/need to look at, maybe selling a product that interests them

The best thing to do is targeted marketing! You will get traffic that way

If you are starting a new forum then you need to as the owner provide/write lots of quality content in the forums for people and search engines to visit. Then you need to do some SEO work and some advertising and soon enough word of mouth will start sending you some traffic. It can take years to get a forum big and it may never be big.

My primary promotion technique is posting my home made videos on sites like youtube, vimeo, break, yahoo video,,,,, only to name a few. Over the past 2 years I have posted over 320 videos - which sends my site a steady stream of targeted traffic that has a low bounce rate.

    Google bounce rate - 48%
    Youtube bounce rate - 18%

Youtube is my #3 source for targeted traffic and my #4 highest source of traffic.

New forums are notoriously difficult to get off the ground. Most new forums are competing with long established ones in similar niches (I doubt there are many unfulfilled niches), and trying to prise users away from other forums to your new one is hard to do.

First thing is no one will join an empty forum, so you need to fill it with threads and posts to start with, you can either use forum posting services, or do this yourself, but the forum must have some meaningful content before any other people will join.

People often visit and view forums, but many don't actually join and post, to get them to post its a good idea to post open questions in your forum, users often like to answer questions in forums so this may help you get signups.

Something else is to offer an incentive, sadly the only incentive people generally react to is a cash based one, so if you can afford it try and offer some kind of cash reward for the highest number of (qualifying) posts and threads each month, this may get some people joining and posting to compete for the prize.

I would recommend reading tips for forum owners and you should realize that getting more members is not really easy. You must keep working hard for that.
