I find it almost impossible to get listed there. 5 years ago it took only a couple of days to get a site listed, but now you can wait for months or even years.

I edited there for the better part of a decade (outta there now). Why it takes so long is because it is FREE and as a result...
    1. They don't have the resources to pay editors (and volunteers are under no obligation to be productive)
    2. Nobody spams the hell outta directories if it hits their credit card every time they hit submit. Dmoz otoh gets a bazillion spams a day, further burying decent submissions

Basically the FREE model works against you. Best bet is to do as Pipes said... submit & forget... then move on to other forms of site promotion.

Bear in mind it costs you nothing to submit and if it takes a long time, submitting now beats submitting later. You dont know which day some volunteer may wander in and spiff up that category, and submitting the day AFTER they do it would suck.

Even if the chances of inclusion are not totally dissimilar to winning the lottery.... if lottery tickets were free I wouldnt shun entering just because the odds are low. Takes a few minutes to submit your site there... do it and move on. Pretty cut and dried... there's no reason to agonize over it, your time is too valuable to spend that way. :)

ADDED: Hey Smaaz... i see by your recent blog you have an association with Neil Denari. Ask him when he's gonna return that bathing suit he borrowed right after the Trinity High production of "The Boyfriend".

I tried becoming an editor for a category that was not related to my sites at all

I'm an electrical engineer by education and was trying to become an editor in on very specific niche because I thought i could help but was declined because i hadnt listed all of my websites in the form (i have over 50 websites, i had only listed the top 10)

oh well, no wonder they dont have enough editors.

    Try to resubmit.
I think it may be due to other problems

I thinks Dmoz Approved our sites on based with Domain Age if Sites Age is Older then 3+ year then it's should be Approved in Dmoz. but this is my Personal Experience and i already submitted my 4 other sites as well and that all sites Domain age is round about 1.5 or under 1 year but i still waiting for their Approval.

Though i submitted my all 4 sites before 8 to 9 months ago but it's not approved till yet.
but I don't know any particular reason that why they approved our site and why still not approved our sites. it's all depend on Dmoz category wise sites moderator.

Really? None of the sites in your signature are even listable. Why did you even submit them? They do not come close to meeting the guidelines that you agreed your sites met when you submitted!! I think that makes you the fool!

You have to be patient. But don't give up. It took me more than a year to get listed on DMOZ. We are a web design company and we also run 3 blogs on our website as such we offer a number of resources for users in addition to offering information on our services on our website. It still took us a year plus to get listed. If nothing happens after 3 or 4 months then you can try to resubmit. We had to do so about 3 times in 12 months, but finally it di happen.

I just wonder why webmasters would pay to be included. It doesn't have a huge DRAMATIC effect in your SERPS from back when you weren't listed. Just focus on what matters the most, your site and build backlinks to them.

It did previously. A few years ago, Google was putting a lot more weight into what was listed on DMOZ with search results. I know in the category I was trying to get in, the first 10 sites, 9 of them were straight out of DMOZ.

Try to resubmit your site and be sure your site has all the necessary requirement according to dmoz's submission guidelines. I suggest to recheck your site and try to add the following information if not available in your site:

    - If your site is commercial then add physical address or detail contact information
    - Make sure your site doesn't have any broken links
    - Do not add any re-direct link from menu navigation bar
    - Do not add any affiliate link or third party ads
    - At the end of your site the year should be updated beside copyright information, ex. 2009 not 2004 or 1992 ;)
    - Add about us page with detail information about your company or site.
    - ETC. :D
