I use google keywords tool, then search every keyword phrase that is relevant to my niche in google to have an idea about the competition. It is effective but a bit long and tiring...

What do you guys use? Wordtracker, keyword elite, other?

Wordtracker and then cross check with Google keywordtools/external. You are right quite ardous job... but it will pay off as you can get a better idea of which are your most probable and best bet of keyword phrases or words.

    Thanks

I honestly don't use any keyword analysis tools, I just produce content related to fields I'm knowledgeable in. It's worked out well for me, but I'm also a patient person. I prefer to grow my sites by just doing what I do best, and letting a good community grow around them over time :).

yeah same here, those two are gold mines, and a great source of what's hot ... only thing is using these you are looking into what was hot - WAS - and not what's up and coming ...

adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal this one is great :) but sometimes I also use wordtracker.. Focusing to only one keyword research tool is not good a good thing, you should also check other KW tool that are reliable.

I agree with the commenters of this thread but also want to add that researching successful competitors keywords is another great way of finding good keyword phrase for particular niche.

They can be useful but they can also be very unreliable

some keywords for example claim to have been searched ten or even one hundred thousand times a month, and when you get to the top you realise that it is total rubbish.

I'd say it's a combination of using tools to get an idea but at the end of the day, I believe you have to build a site and see how well it does yourself.

But, I definitely agree that a little research is needed no matter the niche.
