Hi dear all DP users, I am a newbie to web design and was curious if there are ways of getting non-copyrighted photos you need totally for free. Is there a way? (I am sure there are some). Please share your useful experience to me and the others.
http://www.sxc.hu/ Follow the TOS, contact the photographers if you use their images, and if the photographer has their own site, give 'em a backlink.
Contact the person who took the photo and see if they say yes. Tell them your desired usage of the image and see what they say. If it's celebrity photos your looking, then they'll probably just give you an outright no. If it's something a bit different, then there are many people willing to let you use their images. Check out Flickr and other photo sharing sites to see what rights are with each photo. With a bit of luck yo'll find what your looking for. If you need photos of a particular location, you can either visit it yourself and take some photos. Or look around Flickr,Myspace and other sites. Ask the person who took the photo first though or you may end up in hot water.
Thank you guys, I am gonna give a go using your suggestions. Btw. If I used someones photos without their knowledge: Is it somehow traceble? (you can easilly find someone using your text content but images are not that traceble in web browsers, but I may be wrong)
you can use google in finding free images with this tutorial http://v67.info/where-to-get-free-images/
that is Infringement! what if somebody will use your work or design without your knowledge or permission? think about it! here's one site where you can download photos. some with fee but some are FREE .....photola.co.uk/
Join some photography forums, such as this picture forum and ask. Most people that are into photography have thousands of stock photos. As an example, my pictures folder has over 120 gigs of images and videos in it. Just my june of 2008 folder has around 12 - 14 gigs of pictures in it. And I took every picture that is in that folder. If you need a picture, sometimes all you have to do is ask. But you have to ask in the right places.
To be on the safe side, why don't you use images.google.com to find whatever kind of image you're looking for? Or what do you think?
To be on the safest side still, i think Geekos suggestion is good to go. I mean i discovered http://www.publicdomainpictures.net which containd cool pictures you can use for anything without copyright infringement or whatever. If i were you, i'd start out with those first. And yes of course, there's also http://www.public-domain-photos.com which is quite impressive also. Cheers, Olatunde.
You can search Flickr for them. Check the Creative Commons images only (in the Advanced Search options)
That's true, I even have this little website that list them: http://www.flickrfree.com which I totally forgot about.
