How do you find out what your competitor does?

There is one site that is bugging me a lot. they have #1 or #2 position on Google for a huge number of keywords. Some of their techinques look rather black hat, with keywords stuffing etc.

While my sites go up and down, theirs remain stable no matter what.

Is there a way to find out what they used in the past or now to keep the ranking?

Keyword stuffing is not black hat, just bad user experience. I would check their inlinks on alexa/yahoo site explorer. Also google their whole http adresses to find more inlinks. Maybe you will see something blackhat there.

Also possible to use a tool to see their page in "google bot view", maybe they are doing cloaking (showing different page to google then users).

    etc...

Hah, and just saw your site is publishing articles with links in them. Maybe google for some reason (would not necessarily agree myself) have detected you as doing blackhat?

I know it's better to keep an eye on competitors, but I'm more focused on finding new ideas of promotions and new opportunities.

I use Rank checker from seobook.com to check the position of my competitor.
Also I use backlinks checker from Yahoo - to see where they place links. It's really helpful as I can use many of that methods too.

As I think that website age and popularity play a major role to stable your website is search ranking.

But if you are doing the consistent work on your website with quality then you can also stable your ranking as your competitor doing.

So work on your website regular basis and add new content pages with quality content so its make better impression in search engine.

The age of the website should be considered. They likely have been around for some time. Also the age of the backlinks would factor into the ranking.

I'm sure Google puts more trust on older backlinks. Assume another website has 100 two year old links and your site received 100 links in the last month-everything else is equal. Guess which one will rank better.

Check your competitors sites for on-site optimization -- do they have good titles, page names, domain names, h1, h2, meta keywords, good keyword density etc etc etc

Then check them with backlinkwatch.com -- do they have lots of backlinks and lots of links with relevant anchor text?

If they really used black hat techniques then they may be penalized any time by Google

You can not access all they have done in past but you can do is that check for their backlinks....and you come know from where they getting links in past...try yahoo for this or also backlinkwatch to check their backlink so you also come to know that more details about their backlinks like anchor text, IP etc.

You can have a look at it with alexa and see the top sites that people come from before visiting it.
