I have used keyword spy in the past myself however for the investment I personally think market samurai or my own fav MNF is best. The trick really is to find those buyer keywords, the ones where the prospect is right at the very end of the buying cycle and is searching for that exact product to buy. There are quite a number of ways to uncover these

The Google Keyword Tool is by far the best one to use, especially the "new" version. :)

    Hi,

I signed up Google AdWords a few months ago. The Keyword tool is wonderful, easy to use. This is the tool that I used most often when developing new websites and customizing existing websites.

    Best regards

    Alex

Have not heard of Keyword Spy yet and tools I've always been using for my keyword research are Google Adwords Keyword Tool and Market Samurai. Market Samurai as well has got essential information to show values of SEO competition through the SEOC module. Plus, you could promote or do the link building strategies through its Promotion module. Those modules are both paid but its Keyword Research tool is absolutely free to use. :)

Remember to check out the top ten listings in Google for your keywords, because they are your real competition. If the first page is full of high PR sites, then you need to think of a different keyword. However, if there are articles in the top ten, GO FOR IT!

I use google external keyword tool, very good free tool. You can also use alexa for popular sites in your niche to see which keywords they are getting the most traffic from. Also google trends is very good for traffic history. Can also use microsoft adlabs OCI tool to determine the commercial intent of the searcher.

I use a great tool called "Keyword Blueprint" It's a nifty piece of software that handles keyword research and analysis. What I love about Keyword Blueprint is that the determination of search term worth is done for me automatically. Using the tool, I don’t have to try to figure out if a certain term is actually possible to compete for in SEO terms. That alone saves a tremendous amount of time. I just wrote a review of the product here.

I used Google Keyword Tools and combine with Free Wordtracker. Find at least 3,000 searches to get best result.
