How do you earn from free directories

Hello,

There are lots of people maintaining free directories. I cant understand why they are free. Most of you doing this for earning money and it is free!?! If your aim is earning money why are you making it free? What are the advantages of having a free directory?

I am opening some directories but i wil make them paid. Since i will spend lots of money/time to make it high pred and popular, i think i should make it paid. I want to learn the current state of this market. Is there any advantage of having a free directory?

i run free directories not to earn money but as a hobby

you can earn through featured links,google,ypn and selling monthly links on the homepage

one of my free directories averages $300-$400 a month

 

so why do people view directories? i've never visited a directory website intentionally in my life, and then so even less clicking an ad.

what is the traffic, are people REALLY looking at my directory?

 

People buy links from directories, just to increase their backlinks and Expecting for more PR

 

yes you can get more than $100-$200 by selling links on your directory and also

you can display the Google ads

but the best example is www.pegasusdirectory.com

where you can see the sitewide links are sold or $27 monthly

and also google ads and featured links are sold

I think the owner Iulia would be making around $500 monthly from all these

 

Well for me, I do sell my own ad space on the directory, link space etc

I think you can only start to make money from a directory when it starts to get readl traffic and pagerank.

In my opinion, a directory should have a stong PR and least number of existing ads.

How many of you really care about directory traffic while buying link space? I think the traffic on directories will be minimal no matter how much you spent on it.

Making a directory free can be only important for obtaining some traffic, but i dont think the quality of the traffic (in terms of earning from adsense ads and their clickthrough on existing links) is high in directories.

So as a summary, people make their directory free to obtain some free traffic? Is this traffic stable?

Yes that is what i am planning.

 

To me, I think its best to sell your own ad space, cut out the middle man (ie Google). I think that its the best source of revenue from a directory if you are free.

You can sell homepage links, sell featured listings, promote paid directories, and adsense.

 

if you can enoug backlins to your free directory you can get good traffic from google and other search engines. one of my directories get 1500+ unique hits from google also that pr is 0 .

instead of relying on google to display ads we can display our own ads thats it buy sell text linkads banners etc and other ads that are usually necessary for a webmaster

 

When i hear the words 'directory' and 'earn', it tickles me in my private places

 

why it tickles you, you have earn much from it, or you didnt get much from it

 

I suppose free web directories are for getting back link and getting traffic.
