Let's say that you are new to some market/niche or are looking to get into something new, how do you go about determining what you are going to get into? how do you do "market research" if any?

check search engines for the amount of competition. do some keyword research. a market with 10 000 competitiors will be alot easier to tame than a market with 10 000 000 competitiors. then evaluate how many links, pages etc. the top domain in that market has and evaluate whether you can better it

Actually, if you're really good about choosing a narrow niche market, you shouldn't even have anywhere close to 10,000 competitors ... that's what makes it a niche market in the first place. :)

If you want to be truly successful in the long run, choosing a niche for any kind of business (online or off) can't have to do with advertising keywords or anything like that. It needs to be based on a very narrow focus that you have a particular passion for, targeting a small section of the market that you can specifically appeal to, and you have to be uniquely qualified in some way.

Find something you are interested in enough to put lots of work into it. You'll easily outpace competitors who are just in it for the money. That said, pick your keywords carefully and clearly define the point of your site before you begin.

After that, it's just a matter of daily work that you enjoy.

I normally use a standard procedure to determine which market to go in to. It goes as follows.

I have made an extensive list with all kinds of words I could think of. The subject doesn't matter.

Every so often I feel like starting a new web site and I grab my list to do the research. I have to mention that I don't care if I know anything about the subject or not.

I start of with using the overture keyword tool to go for main keywords with at least around a 30.000 searches. When I've got a list of those collected I use the wordtracker tool which I can recommend to every serious marketer.

With this I do a competition search to find out how big the change is that I can rank high enough in the search engines.

I go back to overture for the bidtool to see how high the advertisers bid on the keywords which I've selected.

Once I have found some niches this way, I check through the search engines to see what kind of web sites rank high for those keywords and I try to find out if there are any affiliate products to promote.

Then I do another search through kwbrowse to find keywords related to my new niche to see if there is enough body to build a good web site.

This way I've got a reasonably clear picture of,

    A. The competition

    B. Available high ranking keywords

    C. Products to promote

    D. Amount of money advertisers pay for google ads

With this information I can build a web site with a good change of bringing in the income which I expect of it.

Noone has mentioned the content. Not only do you want to pick the best words with the most searches and least amount of competition, but you also have to be able to create the content or at least have the money to buy it.

    ITS ALL ABOUT BRANDING
People buy brands. A brand should represent everything you stand for. What do you think of when you hear the name ‘Tiffany’s’? Expensive, chic and elegance are a few words that come to mind.
Ask yourself, How do you want people to identify with you or your brand? Find and identify a niche in your market and exploit it any way you can.

Ooooh! I have already done this and am in the middle of making my new site for the market. I have chosen my keywords carefully, looked at my competitors, my partners, relevant linking partners and relevant directories. My first three keywords have minimum 1,000,000 searches per month! Yes 1 million! Can't wait to publish it!
