How do you design websites?

OK, so I have always paid people to design websites for me but have decided to learn how to do this myself. It will be cheaper, will be easier to transfer ideas, etc.

I am currently learning XHTML and CSS and own both Photoshop and Dreamweaver.

The way I am planning on doing things (once i know what i am doing) is:

    - design the template in photoshop
    - code in dreamweaver

Is this the way you do it?

Sorry for the really noob question but that is exactly what I am when it comes to design.

You may want to try using Dynamic Web Template (.dwt), it is amazing how much easier it can make building a website, expecally in terms of keeping your website's basic design the same.

The only other tip i can give you, is reading source code from other websites... Every webpage you visit can be a learning expence, if you look at there source code!!

(note --> .php/.aspx pages rarely show you the real source code)

That's probably the most common way of doing it, Lynda.com has some really great video tutorials to learn those programs.

Your best best though is to learn what makes a good web design though. Because simply making a website and turning into dreamweaver is 50%.
Your other 50% is making sure your site is aesthetically beautiful as well as user friendly.

I'd say really jsut study sites and when you see something you do not know how to do in photoshop, learn that style from a tutorial and you have one more style in your brain.

check otu my DA account I believe before the Original Content I've done there are some simple photoshop tutorials I have produce results for as well as posted the link on it as well.

www.KrysisFX.deviantart.com go to gallery as well and you can see what i mean by user-friendly as well as visually appealing.

Yeah, slice it... and make a site with tables...

OMG, why not just make a design and code xhtml/css by hand like a professional designer?

    slicing is sooooo 90's...

    Just watch here: http://xhtml-valid-websites.com/demos/scrollsomething/

    Coded by hand

And what are the results? Designed with tables?

Go for tableless design... CSS is the way to code sites today.

What a professional learns over the years can't expect one to learn it overnight. Try designing in PS and use slice method, may be use tables td with some beginner level of css and try getting hang of it. When you work always refer quality tutorials (w3Schools and there are others) so that whatever you learn you learn good not the rotten ones. Read more and more articles regarding webdesign.

Whenever you need any help post in forum, someone surely will help you.
