Hi, i have an image that i want to place large text on it... however i want to create a special type of an effect.

A - I want to cover all of the image with a white layer, then set the white layer to 70% opacity and then place the text on top and make the white layer under the font 0% opacity to give a cut out effect as seen in the photo i took below where the word SEXY is

B - also can anyone recommend a wide based font that will give a large cut out effect...

thanks in advance for your help

What medium is this for? TV, Web, print?
There are a few software packages that can do what you want, but if we don't know where the end product is to be... no one can help you.
Just for the record, no font will create a cut-out look on it's own. You have to use the font in combination with other tools (within the software of choice) to make that illusion.

For example: Fireworks has a cut out filter. Illustrator uses masks. Aftereffects and Photoshop also have tools for this using layers, but one is for films and the other for still images.

I understand that it is an effect and that there is no font that will do this alone, thanks...

This one's easy for Photoshop. You will need to make sure your layers are in the correct order while creating.
Put your image/photo on the bottom layer. Create all of your text using whatever font you wish and make sure the text layers are 'on top' of the image. Do your text on separate layers making sure the one that is 'reversed' is on it's own layer.

Next, create the banner/white box over the image. Hold down the 'control' key and click the layer for the reversed text. This will select only the outline of the text and you will see the selection. Now, select the layer with the banner/white box within the layers palette and press the delete key. This will create a 'punch' in the banner. Then delete the 'reversed' text layer. You're done.

    Good luck!

Reversed is meaning that the background image can be seen through the banner due to the letters being cut out of the banner that is overlaid on top of it. This is called reversed lettering because the letters are not solid but empty, with no pixels, within that layer. It's like having a letterhead with a black banner going across the top with the company name and logo within the banner. If the paper is white and the logo and text are white within the banner, that's reversed type. Hope this helps.

Basically easiest way I can tell you is....

    Take Image
Make New Layer fill with white
Set Opacity of the white filled layer to 70% like you wanted.
Make a new layer, and put text wherever you wanted
Right Click and chose select pixels or ctrl + click on the icon of the new text layer...this should select the pixels also.
Once you see that it selected the pixels...delete your text Layer or turn it off.
    Chose the white filled layer
    And Just Press Delete :p....
This should make a cut-out on the white filled layer...and give you the same effect :)
