I just tried to create a new Youtube account and it tries to make you use only a first and last name, and then it ties it into a Google+ account and a Gmail account. The old way of just signing up with a nickname seems to be gone. I tried entering a username but it said it was not valid. It let me add a nickname in the profile settings, but it does not show up in Youtube
