Well my question is how and where should you place backlinks on your website...? I don't want pages full of links to other peoples website if I can help it.

Is there a better way of linking to other relevant websites..? My website is Hosting.

    Thanks for any replies!! :D

As your website is Hosting it must be mainly to be customer centric not a visitor centric.
You must be very carefull in placing links especially in contextual for example you can link to a page that has a content about the award they give to your hosting but you should not link to a page say, to a cpanel site in a context where you are telling about your hosting feature.
If you are asking about placing paid links it is advisable to place it in footer if its a blog then its better to add in blog rool section or some where in sidebar,
make sure you have given a appropriate title to the links section like our partners, associates etc.

All the best for your Hosting Business/Service :)

I guess no-one would be interested in getting hidden links. And I am sure you too :) . If links gonna be do-follow then its surely put impact on SEO.

Keep outbound links on your site to a relative minimum, nad make sure they are to relevent sites with quality content. Do not hide your links.

But outbound links isn't what you should focus on. you want INBOUND links. Links on other sites that point to your site.

There's quite a few different ways.

    - Find blogs and blogposts that are related to your comment that allow do-follow link in their comment. Post thoughtful comments that contribute to the discussion. I recommend you write at least 100 words that are very specific to the blogpost. And then include your link.

    - Find forums that are related to your content, and post there everyday. From time to time, you'll come across threads where it may be appropriate to post your link. Again, make sure your post is thoughtful, and contributes to the discussion.

    - Write articles, and submit them to article directories. Include a link or two to your site.

    - Use social bookmarking, like facebook, twitter, stumbleupon, digg, and bookmark your content.

    - And yes, advertising. Consider purchasing a text link ad or two on very relevant, high quality websites.
