How do you compete with Scam Artist in the SEO biz?

Ok, I know this is going to anger so many people but it will also I believe create a good environment for a great discussion. We speak to an average of 200 people or more per week and out of those 200+ people per week that we try to or sell SEO to at least 90% say they have been scammed by an Company or a person. My question is why do people keep sending money to companies that are from countries that have no value over credentials and secondly why if so many people get scammed is there so much trust still in the market. I for one can tell you that most people that hear the word SEO automatically say it is a SCAM. No SEO oversight exist currently that I can think of and the internet is full of companies making claims of doing things that are amazing for $19.99, $29.99, $199.99, $200 for first page ranking etc.

Why has our society become so gullible to the fact that nothing is free and everything comes at a price.

Please, answer with moderation as I know many people will think I am a jerk but for the people in the SEO world I know that many will agree with me that this business is so out of control that it is just a matter of time until nobody buys any service at all because of doubt in results.

Please express your feelings towards this and what you think over-all of the SEO biz.

I understand cheap but the more money someone makes the cheaper they want the services done and eventually pay a lot more when those people are supposed to be smart and then get pissed that they didn't get what they wanted when in truth they got what they paid. Common sense is no longer common. So they should change the phrase. LOL

For me, I'd think if a guy really is good at SEO - he'll will not do it for other people cheaply.

And if he's good enough he should be able to convince the 'sensible' customers about its benefit easily (by live example, etc).

edit: that's what I think about the over-all of the SEO biz by the way.
