How Do You Choose A Niche?

Everyone has their own methods for choosing a niche, what is yours?

Have you tried different methods and found one method better than another?

Are there certain factors that would make you reject a niche such as competition, searches etc, when do you say yes and when no or is it just a judgement call.

I just base my choice on what interests me.
Whether there is a large competition or not, i will still follow through with it, considering i can provide unique content etc.

As JyeP said, do something that you like.
If you follow one of your passions than success will come, because you can provide better information than just something that you don't like.
If you like adult stuff, go for it. It will pay off better than anything else. Sex Sells twice!

If you looking for a longer term of success, choosing something that you're passionate about is something that you should go. It will make you happy doing it even though you don't get any single cent for it.

Trust me, opportunities to make money from it will come to you bit by bit. And if you're lucky, you will see the result more quickly.

I agree with finding a niche you are interested in yourself..

You can use something like Google Trends or Yahoo and Ebay to see the most popular topics and searches each to find a popular and profitable niche.

I only pick niches that I have had a long term interest in. And then, only if I have some kind of experience, training or education. So a niche has to be something that I have had a long term involvement in.

I NEVER pick a niche because its the "hot topic" of the day.

All of my sites are long term projects. And if I picked a "hot topic", then sooner or later that topic is going to fade away, and people will lose interest.

Well, I based it on my interests and also I do keyword research in order to get the idea if I continue to it or not. If it has low competitors then I would go into it.

If a primary niche has more competition you can choose the sub niche the (subset of market) which might have potientiality.

You need to chose something that you have knowledge about,to understand people needs in that niche and monetize it.

That is a good question. It must be a topic of interest and one that has potential. For example if I conduct keyword research and there are a lot of searches but not a lot of competing sites, I see an opportunity and feel I can put together useful content I'll pursue it.

I write based on my interest although we all know that real estate or mortgage or loan niche always pays high in advertisements.

I would give up only if I don't have anything to write.

From an author I checked, there are 3 steps to determine if you have niche.

    1. Are people having a need for something? Usually irrational need and strongly emotional.

    2. Are they proactively looking for a solution?

    3. Do they have difficulty finding the solution they are looking for (among the competition)?

If you can answer Yes to the 3 questions, there are chances that you have a good niche.

I always love choosing niche on which i have interest. :)
It is quite boring to work on niche, you have no passion or knowledge about.

Guess I'm the odd ball. I'm into IM to make money. I choose my niches based on products and services that will always be in demand regardless of the economy.

This is how we should think!

It's all about the customer, and what he needs/wants. So use the Google Keyword Tool and Google Trends when you pick your niche.

If you are new to IM, the problem with trying to market items on Google Trends is that there is already so much established competition. I'd suggest picking a niche that has less competition, and that you know something about.
