How do you check if a site is worth getting a link from

Besides page rank and niche related how do you know if a site could help your seo buy getting a link?

I have seen things like blocked domains, reciprocal link farms and other black hat stuff; how can I tell if a site has been a bad boy on Google?

How can I find out if a site is worth trying to get a link or worth buying a link besides the normal niche stuff.

    I appreciate your responses.

I ignore artificial play toys like PageRank and instead look or sites that are comparable and/or related to the ones I'm trying to get links to. For example, if I'm optimizing a site for a water bottle company that sells bottles exclusively to bicyclists (similar to the Polar Bear brand water bottle), I'd be looking for bike shops to get links from.

How would I approach them? EASY. Ask them. Not just for the link, but (assuming I have the client's written permission, of course) if they'd be interested in stocking the product or possibly including it with their bike sales. Not only does the client get the link, but they're also making money hand over fist by having their product being bundled with one that is complimentary to their own.

You can also have a product, service or idea that's so great that others naturally link to it. Tell a influential people in your niche (or one related to yours), let them check it out and if it's as good as you say it is, they'll talk about it. Sometimes a lot. On their own sites and blogs too. This is what's called a "merit based link" -- in other words, a link that stands up to its own merits. If you want to learn more about merit-based links, read my encyclopedia post on the subject here: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?p=12104573#post12104573

One question that you should ask is: Is the site owner serious enough of sustaining the life of this site in the next 3 or 5 or 10 years? If the answer is yes, then that site's link is worthy of your attention.

You can get a good "feel" for a site simply by looking at it, or viewing some key data about it, like how many inbound links does it have and from where etc.

I don't even think about pagerank. What I'm thinking is, will my website be getting traffic from this link? Is that traffic high quality? and if yes for both of those, then it is worth it.

Usually you take in consideration domain age, you can check how often the site, blog was updated , number of OBL, PR, Alexa. You can also use some software to make all the analysis for you :) That's the lazy, fast way :)

Personally I just use IBLbuilder.com. They vet all sites going into their network, then monitor them daily, so I don't have to worry about links not being in place etc.

I focus on the relatively to the site I'm promoting and if they get a lot of traffic. Alexa is a great resource to find out traffic stats.

Some believe checking your backLinks is good for your own website since your competitor could use bad links to link to your site like gamble or adult.

    Usually i am using this

    http://www.bad-neighborhood.com/text-link-tool.htm
    Code (markup):
    to check my website backLinks.

Its help me and save lot of time

all back links are good but the quality ones are the ones that are related to your niche with good anchor text and can bring in some good traffic.
