How do we best identify and fix NAP data?

So I am working through the process of how to best help companies with regards to local SEO and citations are of course huge. I tend to think of this is terms of fractured and unified. I am thinking about how to best determine how fractured a company's NAP data is and how to best unify it.

It seems to me that it would make sense to first do an audit of the existing NAP and specifically the variations of the correct address. Let's say a company has 3 main variations of their correct address, such as:

    • 123 Main St, Suite 321
    • 123 Main St, Ste. 321
    • 123 Main St, #321
It would seem that we would want to determine which variation has the most citations, or at least the best citations, before creating more citations.

Am I on the right track?

What is the easiest method for determining the strongest citation variation?

Thank you for any input and feedback!
