How do Trackback Links provide Backlinks?

I keep seeing on Pligg sites and such where you can submit links that it has a field for trackback links. I always leave this blank, but is it significant in any way and should I be submitting a URL into this field?

I was wondering about this also. Does it have any kind of effect for SE?

you have to put a url of an article you are adding on to and if the owner of that blog approves a snippet with a link will be on his site back to yours

But if you don't, then the trackback just becomes the URL that you submitted your blog entry to - isn't this a little strange? Theoretically you should just have a trackback link be to the root of your website and gain another backlink from websites
