OKay ... I just have to ask this... it may sound dumb to all the experienced members of this forum but it's a genuine question... If I look at a blog such as techeblog .... I see hundreds and hundreds of pictures of new gadgets and weird devices... Where do all these blogs get all this content ?! I wouldn't know where to find and how to get that info from I don't know where , even if I had a million dollars.... I mean, do they BUY this content ? or what ? FOP
a lot of it -- if not all of it -- is created by their own writers and designers. I do all my own design work for my blogs. for content, it's people just finding stories....just like how the newspapers do it..
I mean ... that must be alot and I mean ALOT of work ... You sure there aren't any content selling companies out there ?? FOP.
A lot of those sites have "Contacts" with various companies that send them News Scoops so they can post it on their sites, it good "Free Advertising" for the companies...
This subjects are they authors' interests, specialty and passion. If this is the situation, it's easy for them to write blog entries.
No, none at all /smile Look at my signature. We write for other people's blogs all the time. It can be pretty lucrative for both my writers and the client depending on the subject and how much traffic that particular blog gets. David
Things like techblog and engadget and others have full time staff and are backed by AOL and the like - they make LOADS in advertising each day so they can afford a few people to go and take pictures and others to go to trade shows and write reports. Its a nasty job but someone has to do it!
... interesting .... this sheds light on some angles for me ... A nasty job eh ... don't you wish you were them ... FOP
To find stories I do the following: Subscribe to a few hundred feeds On the press list for as many gadget suppliers and manufacturers I can find Spend a lot of time randomly browsing the web Attend relevent trade shows (a great place to make contacts) Follow offline media (TV, radio and papers) Offer prizes for reader submitted stories It can be very time consuming but if you're interested in the subject it's more pleasure than work.
I don't copy I use them for research. For example if I see a cool product on another gadget site that hasn't been over exposed yet I'll write about it and link to the site I first saw it on.
They read a lot of Feeds from a lot of blogs? Usually big tech blogs have several writers so its no problem churning out dozens of new posts in one day..
The major way that a site like techeblog gets their stuff is by grabbing it from other sites and then linking to that site. Look at BoingBoing ... they are the #1 or so blog on the net, and they don't create any of their own content. An added advantage is that if you use another site's content and link to it, that user will probably see the link in technorati and come visit you (at least for smaller blogs). It sounds illogical at first, but linking to other sites is a GREAT way to build readers. Anita
Hmm thanks for that advice anita ... btw.. does a blog like boingboing earn well ? Just wondering, because everyone says that nicheblogs are best for income ... When I look at boingboing it's absolutely not niche ... its everything ... How do they earn money ? (if they are ...) Grs - FOP
I personally dont listen to this "niche" ideas - people seem to get carried away trying to analyse this sort of thing to absolute death and come up with all sorts of conclusions - its not like "testing" things on the web is an exact science! Fair enough have a niche like "technology", but I dont see the point in having a niche like "technology used in the southern hemisphere within the fisheries industry and associated trades".
Tham main key to all of this content searching is doing the legwork for RSS feeds that are relevant to your site and do not, do not cut and paste. You will go farther in indexing for original work.
