How do these sites make money?

How do sites like Texts From Last Night and FML make money and get so many visitors? I can't see them ranked high in the search engines for many keywords, and they don't offer a product that they sell. I'm confused.

    Advertising.

Both of the sites you mentioned get the VAST majority of their traffic from links on social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook and they make money from the banner ads that they have on their site.

What do you mean by SFW? And yes, these sites are somewhat negative, which is why I made my site to counter them. =) I hope my site can someday be as big as them and make just as big of an impact to counter their negativity.

SFW means "Safe For Work". NSFW would mean the site has nudity or something that shouldn't be viewed at work.

I have a site similar to those two, and yes, the revenue comes from advertising AND my traffic atleast (about 90% of it) comes from facebook, with a liiittle bit from stumbleupon (working on that)

What do you mean they aren't ranked high?
FML is ranked 1 on google for the "f*ck my life" phrase, which is quite popular phrase, and their site is exactly what people who type that phrase out of frustration need.

Mine is TheLoveQuilt (dot) com. It's very similar to FML, just a positive one instead of a negative.

This is true to an extent. I think my idea is unique, but there a lot of sites out there that are just clones.

What concept are you talking about?

Banner ads--it's one of the most expensive ways to advertise on most websites! At least that's what I've found... :D
