How do the page rank prediction work?

I am trying to figure out what my PR would be after the update, but I keep getting a big fat "0" when I try to use the tools that are readily available on the web and the tool keeps saying that the domain doesn't have enough backlinks.

However, I have over 12000 backlinks (from siteexplorer in yahoo) and even google's link:moneyning.com shows 457 backlinks. Could someone please let me know since I've been working quite hard at content and developing links but would like a PR update since I always get nagged by advertisers about this when they want to put up advertising on my blog.

Please help and hopefully Google will finish their update soon!

    ignore these tools, they're inaccurate.

the prediction tools run through some yahoo backlinks, and try their own algorithm out on them, and give you a result. but its not right as they dont know the PR calculation properly.

They usually check the number of backlinks and the PR of the backlinks to predict the future page rank of a site.

They calculate it much the same way a fortune teller reads the tarot cards to predict your future... Put about as much credence in your "predicted" PR as you would the fortune teller's predictions.

Prediction softwares generally take into account the number of links as found from major search engines. Some claim that they take into account the quality of the link, although I doubt it.
As you can see from everybodies comments here, its for entertainment only.

Thanks for the comments. I'm just afraid since if those tools can't find backlinks, then maybe Google wouldn't be able to find backlinks which explains why my PR went from N/A -> 0 last week.

0 is better then N/A actually. N/A means your site doesnt exist on page rank. 0 means it exists and have 0 ranking. I guess google is indexing your pages, and soon you will be seeing a nice page rank >0.

Most of the pr prediction tools will either give inflated figures or zero pr saying that you have insufficient back links. But that is not correct. Hold your breath and wait for the release of much awaited google pr update. Wish you go up in the PR ladder :)

    I do PR prediction in my own way :p, that is comparing the rank of some of my keywords with other major player, and mostly I predict it on the bases of traffic received from google!{again from which keyword}

    Hi,

I have heard some information about page rank,

Each and every quality links should be calculated by google account. Page rank updation takes place once in three months. Page ranking takes place once web pages of the site are indexed in the major search engines like google, yahoo, MSN. And other search engines like Alexa, AltaVista, Lycos and dog pile etc.

So Backlinks should be a quallity links, you have said about 12000 backlinks that links must be a quality links.:)

I checked my domain on 4-5 predication tools, and they say that next update I will be a PR5, and I have 509 backlinks. But well about 400 of those backlinks have a PR3+

Many of them are forgers. Random page rank predicted (plus or minus 1 from the current PR) and this way they get many visitors.
If they predict +1, they get more visitors.
