How do the big boys market their sites/companies? You know like sites such as youtube, digg etc...when they were small, before they were huge. Do they just do what people on DP do, but on a larger scale?, do they just throw money at the problem? or do they use TV/radio or whatever? Just curious really
Yeh, but until people know about it and word gets around, you have to get it off the ground first, right??
they create a buzz. (some how, some way) they have a product or service that actually works. then "word of mouth" takes over. then you're rich. #3 is KEY (since most people on earth are sheep (followers), they want to do what "everyone else" is doing). so, find a way to "tell everyone" that "everyone else" is doing it, and BINGO... think google, classmates, digg, youtube, facebook - sure, they're SMART PEOPLE (VERY SMART!), but if it weren't for #3 - forget about it. *** think about the first time you heard of any of the above examples. it wasn't a billboard or TV ad, someone said, "oh you have to try this, it's awesome." and you told someone else, and they told someone else... IMHO
Well, they start with a few million $$$ budget and provide some quality service. It can't be that hard at this point to become an authority site in your niche
service? not. when's the last time you (or the first time) you actually received outstanding customer service from one of the "big boys." LOL they have PRODUCTS & SERVICES that work! (for the most part). but if you have a question or a complaint or even feedback - don't hold your breath for the "service dept." to get back to you. agreed: they start (or round up) some serious bucks to get going. service. LOL. sorry. * most large corporations consider customer service an EXPENSE, not an investment, hence, the lack of it. just my 2 cents.
Yeh, they provide a good service and word of mouth takes them far, but there is that initial stage where you have to get the thing off the ground and going from a point where no-one knows about it to the point where it is easily recognizable. How do they manage this? if that makes any sense?
services similar to myspace and youtube get where they are at today by word-of-mouth, but a traditional direct sales page type of site will become profitable by recruiting affiliates. And a lot of times you hear the word joint venture, but I like to refer to it as list sharing, this is where a group of people will promote a product to create a huge buzz and help launch a product off of the ground. Then, it become successful if it has viral techniques built into this site so that the initial surge of customers can become affiliates and help promote the site. Regards, Shannon
yah, its word of mouth, but it usually only works when you are the FIRST to offer such a site. So that's their secret, and if you have a website that is the first of its kind, u really won't need to worry that much abt marketing if it offers a good unique service/product
I worked with a fairly large site and they did things like: contests, giveaways, press releases, forum postings, pushed services to journalists for reviews, banner ads on strategic sites, and cross promotions with other already popular sites. Eventualy, if your product or service is good enough and something that people really can find a use for, viral word of mouth will take over and you can scale back the marketing budget and time spent on promotion. If that doesn't happen then you might as well pack up and go home.
They put ads in super big sites.Big Game sites to this alot. On a gaming sites like dragon fable you'll see other game banners on the side.
