How do some forums generate revenue without ads?

    I'm just wondering how do some forums generate revenue without placing ads? Some popular forums (alexa rank of more than 50,000) I visit have absolutely no ads to be seen. No affiliate links either.

    Some forums have very dedicated members who Make donations to the forum. And some forums I know of just are not interested in making money and just enjoy running the forums.

    Yea some people are not in it for the money. And as jpqhay said maybe they are making what the want to make just by donations alone.

    They get revenue from selling links, getting donations from members ,from selling premium memberships .

    I assume a lot would just be aimed at growing traffic. Maybe monetizing the forum will come later?

    Hopefully they make money by selling Premium membership and from donations... ot it may be a non profit forum!;)

    Most of such forums are set up for the clients which are ad free or they might be on growing stage and focused more on traffic before monetizing it in fullest.
