How do SEO contests help organizer?

    Hey,
I have seen, in a SEO contest, participants are asked to rank higher for a keyword.
But, the thing is, that how would this help the organizers??
it's okay, I understand the site which will rank higher, will have a backlink, but, then might as well, do SEO for the site itself, instead of organizing a contest..
Any clues? DP is supposed to be a SEO forum:rolleyes:

In organizing a contest, the site that runs the contest will gain many links in blogs, forums etc, from those who post about the contest. If the site that is organizing the contest has the rules of the contest posted as part of a forum, they may also gain many new members to that forum also.

I am sure others will know of more advantages as well.

yes..but suppose, the keyword is "hello world", and the site of the organizer is "helloword.com"
But when you type "hello world" in google, you will be taken to the participant's page, say "helloworld.blogspot.com" and not the organizer's page.
This will give the participant's site more traffic than the organizer's site.

The term for which you are supposed to rank for in an SEO contest is generally some keyword for which no current site exists.

Generally participants are expected to provide a link back to the site which organises the contests. The organiser, apart from these links, also receives considerable publicity in the webmaster world. Exposure from blogs, forums etc..

So, this mean..if I want to promote my site (say..a gming niche), then what would be a better option:-

    1. Organizing a SEO contest
    2. Direct SEO

Really depends on your budget :)
Organising an SEO contest isn't easy. I suggest you take part in some to get a feel of things.
At this moment, nothingbetter than direct SEO for yer site :)

I would also advice that you do direct SEO as organizing SEO contest can get tricky.
