i am playing around with geotargeting and first had "ALL" countries in my campaign, with very low bids for pretty good keywords. I got clicks and the occasional sale. Now after some thinking i changed so only the main english speaking countries are included, that is US, CA, UK/IRE, NZ, AUS I see an extreme fall in my ad positions and a steep CPC increase... ...eg. ads which i had a CPC of 0.20 for pos #4 are now on pos #35 and similiar. How does google calculate WHAT positon your ad is in when it says "avg. position". Is it that since i targeted ALL countries i had many countries where competing ads for keywords were NOT running and i had a high rank - so overall i looked pretty good ???? Like "i was rank #30 in the usa...but rank #2 in sri lanka".....averaging this to a "pretty good rank" --> BUT only in countries with very BAD conversion rate???? Now with the "premium countries only" i have problems ranking. What can i do? Exclude USA (highly competive) and maybe just target UK or something? Did someone do extensive testing in regards to geotargeting and can give some tips? (products are all "international", english sites) thanks
sometimes. But its not a matter of conversions or clicks, its a matter of my ads falling back in rankings, independently of the ad text.
You hit the nail on the head. WHen you include the highly competitive countries only, you lost the high ranks of the less competitive countries. So your avg position dropped. To bring it back up, you're going to have to bid higher to start and get your ctr established. Then you can lower it later.
