However, I could not understant how adult sites could improve their SEO. Their keywords are usually not search engine friendly, and it is hard to build backlinks via leaving comments with links to adult sites.

People getting it on in front of cameras are ever so popular (More popular than Brittney Speeers) Regarding the traffic - I suppose the main reason some porn sites get huge amounts of traffic is that people form coalitions, they create large networks of similar sites and then just share the dosh. It is a very, very effective method of pulling in the traffic. I've worked on a network (not porn though) and I know how good it is.
I wouldn't mind being a webmaster for an adult site....only problem is (and I think its the case of most people) that my PC is a family PC...in the dinning room. There is a lot of traffic, but a lot of it is junk. There are lots of freeloaders out there and the tube sites spend bandwidth on them daily. The key with adult (or any) traffic is quality, not quantity. Having lots of traffic can be a curse if it doesn't convert. I'll take 1000 visitors that convert over a million that don't any day, regardless of the nature of the site. Ratios over volume always. There is no solid evidence that this is true. Only in some places in the World, in others it is perfectly legal.

I see nobody really answered your questions. Yes, traffic trades really are that powerful. Those videos that are watermarked really bring in traffic. Traffic trading is the one thing that the adult webmasters always had over mainstream webmasters.
Porn sites attract the majority of internet traffic, but I don't see it as being very profitable because there's so much free porn, so why would you want to buy anything?
So there is alot of free porn, but we would not mind having tons more, and even more, and more, and more, and more. When it comes to porn, somehow variety is great. Porn is awesome.
