Hello everyone, I was wondering, how do the pixel sites like million dollar homepage get traffic? Thanks
Usually they don't The original MDHP is so popular because of the massive media attention it received.
From what I understand from Alex Tew's pundits, he was paying over 6K a month to a PR agent. It looks like it is worth it considering the press he got. PR works well for other sites as well and is being added to our toolbox this year for upcoming sites. Kevin
Clearly this is another example of a site with an original idea that got a lot of attention. It reminds me of the ebay auctions for things like ghosts or virgin mary in toast. If Jay Leno picks it up, the auction can run into the 10's of thousands of dollars. So anyway, I'm sure you can make a little money by copying the idea, but the easy money has already been made.
I had one guy come to me for advice. A friend of his came up with this brilliant idea of copying the Million dollar homepage. All he needed was an investment of $2000 to make it happen. Wanted investors. My advice: No way, no how. It would just be like throwing money away. If you've got a brilliant unique idea like the original sure, but being a copycat won't get you anywhere.
oj. we have just made a similar page but think is a bit original.. hope it actually goes somewhere... it's the doyoulikemyface.com site.
I'm sick of the clones now, even if they add an obvious twist, they're still useless and never going to generate enough money. Correct me if I'm wrong, but apart from MDHP, have any clones made over $1000?
I remember reading that milliondollarhomepage had spawned over 500 competitors over the first week. Yea - talk about jumping on the bandwagon. I must admit I too quickly checked the availability of millionpoundhomepage... and it had already been snatched!
Sometimes cones will put up fake ads on the pixel grid to create the appearence of buyer activity. That way people are more likely to join as part of a herd mentality.
I tested the waters with the whole idea and brought in over $500. I had over 40,000 unique visitors in october. But then all the clones started and I let it go away. I got traffic from site lists and from natural searches from msn and yahoo. I made the wise decision to use my established domain so It wasn't a money pit. My site grew to a PR4 as well.
I know lots of good PR companies but it depends heavily on the industry. Are you actually looking for one or just posting that?
I agree that many pixel-advertising sites out there fail to get any traffic. They've set-up their site in a hasty manner to try and get some of the exposure that the "MillionDollarHomepage" received. I run a pixel-advertising website and I have to admit I was one of them. If you actually research into some of these sites you'll notice that either they have a low number of links and have no traffic, or have relatively low number of links and yet have a huge amount of traffic. For an example lets look at the "MillionQuaterWebpage". They have an Alexa ranking of 4,020 and yet only have 1,200 links (MarketLeap). To me it seems like these sites are paying for their traffic. Putting your advert on a site paying for traffic is fine as long as the visitors view the site properly. However if the webmaster stops paying for traffic it'll basically make your advert useless as the site has a low number of links and generates little or no traffic. Now that the pixel-advertising idea is old I think webmasters of pixel-advertising sites will have to change their approach to run a successful pixel-advertising site. I run a pixel-advertising site that hosts gambling adverts. I am working on building up natural, targeted traffic through link building with gambling sites, participation in gambling forums, writing gambling blogs, gambling webrings, press releases etc... For a website to receieve traffic it must be of use to the visitor. I believe that by categorising my website as a gambling pixel-advertising website I can make my site into a sort of visual online directory. The very fact that I'm trying to build up targeted traffic may appeal to advertisers as well. Obviously pixel-advertising is still at the early stages of it's development. May be it'll just fade away and become a thing of the past and no one will carry on the idea. But we'll have to see. [And gawd that became a long post....]
