I have always wondered about this? How do you think Ubuntu coders make money? Shouldn't open source be free? :S I found a list of 10 Open Source companies with a really high funding that it's not even funny.... http://www.itworldcanada.com/articles/10OpenSource/index.htm
Nice list and I never heard the name of the companies before. Free in Open Source doesn't mean it's free in term of price, but free in here mean that you're free to do anything with it. Just think the word free in "freedom".
usually if ti's free, it'll get more traffic eg.. phpbb vs vbulletin traffic equals money no matter how you look at it
They are programmer from different parts of the world. They work for free........! Mozilla may be the best example. But the programmers working on this projects may be popular and indirectly they get works.
traffic, donation and status ..... u can tell ur client, you're joomla, phpbb, mozilla, ubuntu programmer, i'm sure u get the project ...
Mostly the funding comes from advertising. For instance, mozilla is getting money from sponsorship with a deal from google to place their page as a startup page.
I think they get from donations, Also the programmers just want to share their skills and thus they work for free
I think they have so much money already, so that they work for free as they don't need money any more.
There are a couple of ways to make money off free software. First, if you advertise on the download site you are going to get that ad revenue. Then the larger Linux distros and similar enterprise software charge for installation and support, which is probably the biggest source of income for companies like Red Hat or Eclipse and the like. Additionally donations and VC funding play a big part of funding open source.
they still can make money from advertising and donations. Just users dont need to pay for it doesn't mean nobody will give them the money.
You have a completely wrong definition of open source and free software. It is free as in freedom, not money. And no, opensource developers are not charity workers, most of them have families to feed and are paid to do their job.
Some projects have financial backend by large companies. These companies make use of these projects for one of their products.
