Some open source companies generate revenue through professional services (i.e. consulting, training), documentation (printed and bound copies), installation, and of course premium support. Check out MySQL as an example http://www.mysql.com/services/.
Lots of open source projects aren't done with the motivation of making a dollar. The larger ones you mention have companies that are built to support the software but not making money off of the software directly. A prime example is WordPress and Automattic which offers services and consulting on WP projects.
They make money through donations some times company's are pay them for make custom versions like modified and for make plug ins
Mostly from Donations and funds from Big Organisations! BTW, Alexander Levin of WordPress who is 23 years old made $57Million with wordpress... Wordpress also makes money from its premium services. You can check it at http://wordpress.com/products
This is false. Alexander Levin is the fella behind Image Shack and has no connection with Wordpress. http://imageshack.us/
For your info, Alexander Levin is the owner of both Wordpress and Imageshack Check this: http://www.retireat21.com/top-young-run-websites/
This is over loads of blogs on the internet - the information is wrong, Alexander Levin has nothing to do with Wordpress.
FireFox makes about $50 millions per year only from their default browser homepage with Google search.
Firefox is sickening. Everytime you use their homepage and search with Google and click on a sponsored link, they get paid. On top of that they beg for donations, etc. Google is finally fed up with it and that's why they released Chrome. I hope G! severs all ties with Firefox. As for projects like Wikipedia and Wordpress? They get a lot of donations and companies back them up with investments. The owners of these websites no longer have much to do either, since they released the original and people as a community continue to grow them.
They show that mozilla is owned by 22 years old individual. This is not true, maybe he is listed as tech contact person.
I think Google is happy to deal with FireFox because they included it in google software pack. Wikipedia is not making any money, but its founder Jimmy Wales founded wikia.com that has advertising and making money but he still claims that wikipedia should not contain ads
