if you have a mailing list (especially one with sites related to your content) you could promote your site and/or ask for a backlink/link exchange
but keep in mind that you must send emails to people who suscribed in your mailing list. If you do a mailing list program with people who doesnt want to receive them.. we call that spam
but since mailing lists will have subscribers who visited my site, how does that help draw non-visitors?
There are a couple ways. One your list is a commodity and you can barter ad space in other lists etc. to broaden your audience. This can be super effective if you find some other complementary lists -- where the target audience overlaps but your lists are different. You can also offer some item of value/interest on your site that brings your subscribers in and then prompts them to tell their friends to they visit etc. If you are interested in learning more about viral marketing then you might want to check out this free ebook by Harvey Segal, The Ultimate Super Tip. well, you can always remind them of the site they visited to join the list, so they come back eventually
People visit your site, forget, get your e-mail a month later, and come back. Or, you advertise in another mailing list, in your niche and get all new visitors. Its alot of extra work, but if you have a big site it pays off.
I agree it helps a lot in driving traffic. Just like cutter said it reminds your subscriber to revisit your visit your site and may sometimes refer you to their friends. Good luck('',)
