How do I view the site I built in different browsers?

    Hello,

I have built a few sites on my Windows XP system with Frontpage 2003 and all has been well. My current client, however, has a Mac at home and says the site looks quite different using her Netscape browser. I know there are others out there (Mozilla, Opera, Firefox, etc.) but how can I see what my site looks like on those browsers when I only have IE on my machine?

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Beverly:)

Anyone who designs websites should have ie, firefox, and netscape installed on their system. As far as a mac, there are various services that basically allow you to view the site by logging onto on of their machines, but cost wise, it might be cheaper just to buy an old mac.

I also highly recommend Opera. Opera has the strictest standards, in my opinion.

You might check out your public library as well and see what they offer.

yep, go and download the other browsers.

you can keep IE as your default browser if you want.

personally i only test in "IE" and "Mozilla firefox", but then what would i know about building pages :(

Same here, Netscape and Firefox always look the same to me. But, I have all three installed.

As a web designer/developer it is a must to have all the major browsers installed. That means Netscape, Firefox and Opera for windows. Netscape 7+, Firefox, and Mozilla all use the same engine to render pages and do so identically. Earlier versions displayed pages differently.

There is browsercam.com which has a trial that allows you to check many of the browsers on live machines. Browsershots has a queuing system that can take 24 hours for a response. I think this is too slow. For $20 you can get an unlimited day on browsercam.com.

In addition there is (browsers.evolt.org/) which is an archive of most browsers ever available. You obviously can't run the mac on PC without emulator software. There is a nifty package of self contained versions of IE that allows you to run versions 3, 4, 5, 5.5, and 6 on the same machine. Netscape has an archive on their site.

    Best of luck.

    Jay

Hmm once you do that you should make designs for individual browsers then use a redirect feature based on user agent that way the site will look perfect on any browser because its designed especially for that browser.

Vmware is available for a trial download. You could also install Virtual PC. Contary to popular belief it is easy to install unixes in Virtual PC, giving you a chance to look at your website through that community's eyes. The hardest one to solve is making sure Mac users can see your site OK. However, the latest macs are not overly expensive and if it is a real issue you could buy a new iMac or the mini.

There's no way to view the pages on different browsers without actually having the browsers. You should definately design and build pages for firefox.
