How do I use SEF in Joomla?

There's an option in the Admin CP to enable SEF. What do I need to do in order to do so? I tried enabling it, but only the first page would work properly, all the other pages were "broken" and didn't show up properly. Someone told me to edit the .htaccess file. What do I need to edit?

All you need to do is enable SEF in admin cp then change htaccess.txt (which was already extracted on your host) to .htaccess

You need to access your web hosting back-end. Not your Joomla back-end.

Do you have Cpanel web hosting?

Anyways... Look for a File Manager icon and click through

then click on the folder "public_html"

rename your ".htaccess" file to anything like ".htaccess_OLD"

locate another file in the same directory with "*htaccess*" in it, cant remember what joomla calls it but it has "*htaccess*" in it and rename that to ".htaccess"

joomla's SEF urls are ok. but if you want more control I would suggest using something like SH404SEF

(used to be free but not anymore)

SEF stands for Search Engine Friendly URLs

To get Search Engine Friendly URLs to work, do the following:

1 FTP to the root directory of your website and rename the file .htaccess.txt to simply .htaccess

2 In the Joomla Global Configuration Page, turn all three SEF options on the RH-side to ON

Access your website and all the URL will show up as configured in each article.

I have also used SH404sef and it works great! Easy to set up and it works like a charm...also has easy options to adjust tags and titles if necessary.
