I heard that you can park a domain that you are not using where they will put ads on it for you and you can earn money. Do I need to have web hosting too, or do I only need a domain name? Active sites have content which can be written about on other sites or recommended on sites like digg, but how do you get people to go to a parking site?
You only need to be the owner of the domain to park it, no hosting etc. Just sign up with a parking company like Parked, Sedo etc and they will explain how to change your name server to there one so the domain point to them.
There can only be 3 types of traffic to your parked domain, other kind traffic is not allowed by parking companies such as incentive, search engines marketting, etc.: 1. Through search engines 2. Direct traffic 3. link to your domain with "FOR SALE" or "DOMAIN FOR SALE". You can put a link to your parked domain with out specifying "Domain for sale" or "For Sale"
just need the domain name pointed to the parking service name servers i am using sedo and namedrive, and quite happy with them
http://www.fka200.com/domain-parking - the 3 parking providers i recommend. Namedrive especially for someone just starting out. More detailed post later!
Do they all pay about the same? Would they all get the same number of hits for the same domain name? Based on what do you choose your parking company? Why do some people have more than one parking company rather than just pick the best one?
There's a lot of factor. People ask me all the time how many parking providers I use and which one is the "best." Right now I'm using about uhhh... 7 parking providers. All 7 (could be more, I'm not sure... 7 minimum) have differences that appeal to me, and domains are normally "fed" to a different provider depending on my prediction of its niche/traffic/most attractive lander/etc. It's not really me just using ONE company for ALL my domains. To me it depends on the domain and my overall "experience" with different providers. Some niches just perform better at different providers. Not all domain parking providers pay the same... you'd have to test which domain does best depending on the provider. Traffic should be the same, but some providers (like Sedo) might count bot traffic... which to me is a big no-no. Hope I answered some questions! If you have any questions, feel free to PM me. Extremely busy for the next 4 days, but hopefully I can answer personalized questions quick enough.
As I am not having anything of my own on the page, does it matter what the name of the domain is? For example can I park a domain called noname.org and say that it is about banking, if I think banking pays well? Is there any way I can optimize it so that I get more visitors?
You can put in keywords, but some providers "approve" the keywords. If they say OK,then it should be alright. CTR for keywords not related to the domain might be really bad... so I don't even bother (though some do). As for getting traffic to the site... a lot of the parking providers don't allow "optimizing" for traffic.
