How do i tell if a keylogger is sending information back to someone?

I was recently on one of my friends computers when i noticed he had a keylogger installed (he forgot to have it hide so it was in the tray in the corner) I asked him about it and he said it was to check on his kids etc.

So obviously i never put any of my passwords into it, but I've always heard bad things about keyloggers (spyware etc.) because i always thought they sent all the information back to another user/s.

So anyway cutting a long story short is there anyway to find out if the keylogger is sending all the information back to an external source?

Look at your firewall logs, or run a sniffer.
